untains,thehighestrangeonEarth,havebeenreferredtoasthe"roofoftheworld."Ifthatisso,thereisamysterycalledtheYetiinourattic.InTibetanthew
ordmeans"magicalcreature"andtrulyitisaseeminglysupernaturalenigmaintheshapeofahairy,bipedcreaturethatrese
mblesagiantape.TheHimalayaslieontheborderbetweenIndia,Nepal,andTibet(nowpartofChina).Theyareremoteandforbidding.Largestretchesaroundtheseroughvall
eysandpeaksareuninhabited.Thetallestmountainintheworld,Everest,29,028feethigh,lieshalfinNepal,halfinChina.ItisfromNepal,though,thatmostattemptstocl
imbEverest,andthesurroundingmountains,aremade.InKatmandu,thecapitolofNepal,avisitorfindshimselfimmersedintheYetilegend.Heisacommer
cialmoneymakerforthetouristindustry(there'sevenaHotelnamedthe"YakandtheYeti")aswellaslegend,religionandfantasytosomeoftheNeplaes
epeople.ThefirstreliablereportoftheYetiappearedin1925whenaGreekphotographer,N.A.Tombazi,workingasamemberofaBr
itishgeologicalexpeditionintheHimalayas,wasshownacreaturemovinginthedistanceacrosssomelowerslopes.Thecreaturewasalmostathousandfe
etawayinanareawithanaltitudeofaround15,000feet."Unquestionably,thefigureinoutlinewasexactlylikeahumanbeing
,walkinguprightandstoppingoccasionallytouprootorpullatsomedwarfrhododendronbushes,"saidTombazi,"Itshowedupdark
againstthesnowand,asfarasIcouldmakeoutworenoclothes."ThecreaturedisappearedbeforeTombazicouldtakeaphotographandwasnotseenagain.Thegr
oupwasdescending,though,andthephotographerwentoutofhiswaytoseethegroundwerehehadspottedthecreature.Tombazifoundfootprintsinthesno
w."Theyweresimilarinshapetothoseofaman,butonlysixtosevenincheslongbyfourincheswideatthebroadestpartofthefoot.Themarksoffivedistincttoesandtheinst
epwereperfectlyclear,butthetraceoftheheelwasindistinct..."Therewere15printstobefound.Eachwasoneandonehalftotwofeetapart.ThenTombazilostth
etrailinthickbrush.Whenthelocalswereaskedtonamethebeasthe'dseentheytoldhimitwasa"Kanchenjungademon."Tombazididn'tthinkhe'dseenademon,buthecouldn'tfi
gureoutwhatthecreaturewaseither.Perhapshe'dseenawanderingBuddhistorHinduasceticorhermit.AstheyearswentbythoughandotherYetistoriessurfaced,Tombazib
egantowonderifhe'dseenonetoo.Yetireportsusuallycomeintheformoftracksfound,peltsoffered,shapesseenatadistance,orrarely,actualface-to
-faceencounterswiththecreatures.FacetofaceencountersnevercomewithresearcherslookingfortheYeti,butwithlocalswhostumbleintothecreatureduringt
heirdailylives.SomeofthebesttrackseverseenwerefoundandphotographedbyBritishmountaineersEricShiptonandMichealWardin1951.The
yfoundthemonthesouthwesternslopesoftheMenlungGlacier,whichliesbetweenTibetandNepal,atanaltitudeof20,000feet.Ea
chprintwasthirteenincheswideandsomeeighteenincheslong.ThetracksseemedfreshandShiptonandWardfollowedthetrailforamilebeforeitdisappeared
inhardice.Somescientiststhatviewedthephotographscouldnotidentifythetracksasfromanyknowncreature.Others,though,fe
ltitwasprobablythetrailofalanguarmonkeyorredbear.Theynotedthetracksinsnow,meltedbythesun,canchangeshapeandgrowlarger.Evenso,t
hebear/monkeytheoryseemsunlikelyasbothoftheseanimalsnormallymoveonallfourfeet.Thetrackswereclearlyth
atofabiped.Shipton'sandWard'sreputationsargueagainstahoaxontheirpartandtheremotenessandheightofthetrail'slocationarguesagainstthembeinghoaxe
d.Shipton'sfootprintswerenotthefirstorlastdiscoveredbyclimbersamongtheHimalayas.EvenSirEdmundHillaryandhisSherpaguide,TenzingNorgay,o
ntheirrecordascenttothetopofMountEverest,in1953,foundgiantfootprintsonthewayup.Oneofthemorecuriousreportsofac
loseencounterwithaYetioccurredin1938.Captaind'Auvergue,thecuratoroftheVictoriaMemorialinCalcutta,India,wastravelingtheHimalayasbyhimselfwhenhe
becamesnowblind.AsheneareddeathfromexposurehewasrescuedbyaninefoottallYetithatnursedhimbacktohealthun
tild'Auverguewasabletoreturnhomebyhimself.Inmanyotherstories,though,theYetihasn'tbeensobenign.OneSherpagirl,whowastendingheryaks,des
cribedbeingsurprisedbyalargeape-likecreaturewithblackandbrownhair.Itstartedtodragheroff,butseemedtobestartledbyherscreamsandlethergo.It
thensavagelykilledtwoofheryaks.Sheescapedwithherlifeandtheincidentwasreportedtothepolice,whofoundfootprints.Severalexpeditionshaveb
eenorganizedtotrackdowntheYeti,butnonehavefoundmorethanfootprintsandquestionableartifactslikescalpsandhides.TheLond
onDailyMailsentanexpeditionin1954.AmericanoilmenTomSlickandF.KirkJohnsonfinancedtripsin1957,58,and59.Proba
blythemostwell-knownexpeditionwentin1960.SirEdmundHillary,thesamemanthathadfirstclimbedEverestin1953,leadthe1960tripinassociationwithDesmon
dDoig.TheexpeditionwassponsoredbytheWorldBookEncyclopediaandwaswelloutfittedwithtrip-wirecameras,aswellastimelapseandinfraredphotography.D
espiteaten-monthstaythegroupfailedtofindanyconvincingevidenceoftheexistenceoftheYeti.Theartifactstheyexamined,two
skinsandascalp,turnedouttobelongtotwobluebearsandaserowgoat.AtthetimeHillaryandDoigwroteofftheYetiaslegend.Later,though,Doigdecided
thattheexpeditionhadbeentoobigandclumsy.Theydidn'tseeaYeti,heagreed,butnordidtheyobservesuchanimalslikethesnowleopa
rdwhichwasknowntoexist.AfterspendingthirtyyearsintheHimalayasDoigbelievesthattheYetiisactuallythreeanimals.Thefirsti
swhattheSherpascallthe"dzuteh."Largeshaggyanimalsthatoftenattackcattle.DiogthinksthisisprobablytheTibetanbluebear.Acreaturesorareitisknownonlyinthewe
stthroughafewskins,bonesandaskull.Thesecondtype,called"thelma,"isprobablyagibbon(aknowntypeofape)thatDiogthinksmayliveasfarnorthasNepa
l,thoughit'sneverbeenspottedpasttheBrahmaputraRiverinIndia.ThethirdYeti,"mihteh,"isthetrueabominablesnowmanofleg
end.Asavageape,coveredwithblackorredhairthatlivesataltitudesofupto20,000feet.Sofarthereisnofirmevidencetosuppor
ttheexistenceoftheYeti,butthereisnowayshowthathedoesn'texisteither.Ifheindeedlivesinthebarren,frozen,
upperreachesoftheHimalayaswherefewmendaretotread,hemayfindhisrefugesafeforalongtimetocome.
