ewindturbinesaddedin1998havepushedoverallwindgeneratingcapacityworldwideto9,600megawatts--doublethecapacityinplacethr
eeyearsearlier.Thesewindturbineshavethepowertogenerateroughly21billionkilowatt-hoursofelectricityin1999--enoughfor
3.5millionsuburbanhomes,saysWorldwatch.Thewindpowerindustryisalsoexpandingrapidly,withsalesofroughly$2billionin1998.Thewindindustry
iscreatingthousandsofjobsatatimewhenemploymentinmanufacturingisfallinginmanynations,accordingtoWorldwatch.Fourna
tionsleadthegrowthinwindenergy:Germany,Denmark,SpainandtheUnitedStates.Germanyincreaseditscapacitythemostin1998,ad
ding800megawatts,pushingitswindenergycapacitytomorethan2,800megawatts.Germany'sseven-year-oldwindindustryisalreadyprodu
cingasmuchelectricityastwoofthecountry'slargestcoal-firedpowerplants,accordingtoWorldwatch.Inthewindynorthernst
ateofSchleswigHolstein,windnowprovides15percentoftheelectricity.Spainadded395megawattsofwindpowerin1998,
pushingthecountry'soverallcapacityup86percentto850megawatts.InthenorthernindustrialstateofNavarra,whichhasaparticularlyactivewindenergyin
dustry,23percentofthestate'selectricityalreadycomesfromwindturbines,mostofthemmanufacturedinlocalassemblyfacilitiesthatemployhundred
sofworkersintheareaaroundPamplona.WindpowerinstallationsalsogrewrapidlyintheUnitedStatesin1998,withapproximately
235megawattsofnewcapacityaddedacross10differentstates.ThesurgeinU.S.windinvestmentwasspurredbyeffortst
otakeadvantageofawindenergytaxcreditthatisscheduledtoexpireinJune1999,accordingtoWorldwatch.Thelargestprojectsarea107-megawattwindfarminMi
nnesota,oneof42megawattsinWyoming,andoneof25megawattsinOregon.Mostoftherestofthenewcapacitycamefromseveraldozensmallprojects,rangingf
romMainetoNewMexico.Denmarkadded235megawattsofcapacitythispastyear.Thecountry's1,350megawattsofwindpowernowgeneratemorethaneightpercentofthecountry's
electricity.And,Denmark'swindcompanieshavebecomeleadingexporters,accordingtoWorldwatch,accountingformorethanhalfthenewwindturbinesins
talledworldwidein1998.Thedevelopingworldwouldbenefitmostfromfurthergrowthofthewindindustrybecausethepowerdemandi
sgrowingrapidlyandmanycountrieslackadequateindigenoussuppliesoffossilfuels,saysWorldwatch.Sofar,Indiaisaheadofthegame,withmorethan900mega
wattsofwindpowerinplace.However,winddevelopmenthasslowedthereinthelasttwoyearsduetoasuspensionofthetaxbrea
ksthatwereenactedinthemid-1990s.Indianobserversexpectthenewgovernmenttorestoresomeoftheseincentives,whichcouldboostwinddevelo
pmentin1999.Acceleratedgrowthofthewindindustryislikelyin1999,withatleast2,500megawattsofcapacitylikelytobeinstal
led,accordingtoWorldwatchInstituteestimates.SpainandtheUnitedStatesarepredictedtoexceed500megawattsofne
wturbineseach.OthercountrieswheremarketgrowthislikelyincludeCanada,Italy,Japan,NorwayandtheUnitedKingdom.Among
developingcountries,Argentina,Brazil,CostaRica,EgyptandMoroccoaresomeofthenationsthatappearpoisedtodevelopsizablewindindustriesinthecomingyears,says
Worldwatch.
