Worldwatch.Thewindturbinesaddedin1998havepushedoverallwindgeneratingcapacityworldwideto9,600megawatts--doub
lethecapacityinplacethreeyearsearlier.Thesewindturbineshavethepowertogenerateroughly21billionkilowatt-hoursofelectr
icityin1999--enoughfor3.5millionsuburbanhomes,saysWorldwatch.Thewindpowerindustryisalsoexpandingrapidly,withsale
sofroughly$2billionin1998.Thewindindustryiscreatingthousandsofjobsatatimewhenemploymentinmanufacturingisfallinginmanynations,accordingtoWorld
watch.Fournationsleadthegrowthinwindenergy:Germany,Denmark,SpainandtheUnitedStates.Germanyincreaseditscapacitythemostin1998,adding800megawatts
,pushingitswindenergycapacitytomorethan2,800megawatts.Germany'sseven-year-oldwindindustryisalreadyproducingasmuchelectricit
yastwoofthecountry'slargestcoal-firedpowerplants,accordingtoWorldwatch.InthewindynorthernstateofSchleswigHolstein,windnowprovides15percentoftheelec
tricity.Spainadded395megawattsofwindpowerin1998,pushingthecountry'soverallcapacityup86percentto850megawatts.
InthenorthernindustrialstateofNavarra,whichhasaparticularlyactivewindenergyindustry,23percentofthesta
te'selectricityalreadycomesfromwindturbines,mostofthemmanufacturedinlocalassemblyfacilitiesthatemployhundredsofwor
kersintheareaaroundPamplona.WindpowerinstallationsalsogrewrapidlyintheUnitedStatesin1998,withapproximately235megaw
attsofnewcapacityaddedacross10differentstates.ThesurgeinU.S.windinvestmentwasspurredbyeffortstotakead
vantageofawindenergytaxcreditthatisscheduledtoexpireinJune1999,accordingtoWorldwatch.Thelargestprojectsarea107-megawattwindfarminMinnes
ota,oneof42megawattsinWyoming,andoneof25megawattsinOregon.Mostoftherestofthenewcapacitycamefromseveraldozensma
llprojects,rangingfromMainetoNewMexico.Denmarkadded235megawattsofcapacitythispastyear.Thecountry's1,350me
gawattsofwindpowernowgeneratemorethaneightpercentofthecountry'selectricity.And,Denmark'swindcompanieshavebecomeleadingexp
orters,accordingtoWorldwatch,accountingformorethanhalfthenewwindturbinesinstalledworldwidein1998.Thedevelopingworldw
ouldbenefitmostfromfurthergrowthofthewindindustrybecausethepowerdemandisgrowingrapidlyandmanycountrieslackadequateindigenoussupp
liesoffossilfuels,saysWorldwatch.Sofar,Indiaisaheadofthegame,withmorethan900megawattsofwindpowerinplace.However,win
ddevelopmenthasslowedthereinthelasttwoyearsduetoasuspensionofthetaxbreaksthatwereenactedinthemid-1990s.Indianobserversexpectthenewgo
vernmenttorestoresomeoftheseincentives,whichcouldboostwinddevelopmentin1999.Acceleratedgrowthofthewindindustryislikelyin1999,withatleas
t2,500megawattsofcapacitylikelytobeinstalled,accordingtoWorldwatchInstituteestimates.SpainandtheUnitedS
tatesarepredictedtoexceed500megawattsofnewturbineseach.OthercountrieswheremarketgrowthislikelyincludeCanada,Ita
ly,Japan,NorwayandtheUnitedKingdom.Amongdevelopingcountries,Argentina,Brazil,CostaRica,EgyptandMoroccoaresomeofthenationsthatappearpoisedtodev
elopsizablewindindustriesinthecomingyears,saysWorldwatch.
