capacityinplacethreeyearsearlier.Thesewindturbineshavethepowertogenerateroughly21billionkilowatt-hoursofelectricityin1999--enoughfor3.5mi
llionsuburbanhomes,saysWorldwatch.Thewindpowerindustryisalsoexpandingrapidly,withsalesofroughly$2billionin1998.Thewindindustr
yiscreatingthousandsofjobsatatimewhenemploymentinmanufacturingisfallinginmanynations,accordingtoWorld
watch.Fournationsleadthegrowthinwindenergy:Germany,Denmark,SpainandtheUnitedStates.Germanyincreaseditscapacitythemostin1998,adding800megawa
tts,pushingitswindenergycapacitytomorethan2,800megawatts.Germany'sseven-year-oldwindindustryisalreadyproducingasmuchelec
tricityastwoofthecountry'slargestcoal-firedpowerplants,accordingtoWorldwatch.InthewindynorthernstateofSchl
eswigHolstein,windnowprovides15percentoftheelectricity.Spainadded395megawattsofwindpowerin1998,pushingth
ecountry'soverallcapacityup86percentto850megawatts.InthenorthernindustrialstateofNavarra,whichhasaparticularlyactivewindenergyindustry,23percentoft
hestate'selectricityalreadycomesfromwindturbines,mostofthemmanufacturedinlocalassemblyfacilitiesthatemployhundredsofworkersin
theareaaroundPamplona.WindpowerinstallationsalsogrewrapidlyintheUnitedStatesin1998,withapproximately235megawattsofnewcapacityaddedacross10differen
tstates.ThesurgeinU.S.windinvestmentwasspurredbyeffortstotakeadvantageofawindenergytaxcreditthatisscheduledtoexpireinJune1999,accordingtoWor
ldwatch.Thelargestprojectsarea107-megawattwindfarminMinnesota,oneof42megawattsinWyoming,andoneof25megawattsinOregon.Mos
toftherestofthenewcapacitycamefromseveraldozensmallprojects,rangingfromMainetoNewMexico.Denmarkadded235megawattsofcapacitythispastyea
r.Thecountry's1,350megawattsofwindpowernowgeneratemorethaneightpercentofthecountry'selectricity.And,Denmark'swindc

gawattsofwindpowerinplace.However,winddevelopmenthasslowedthereinthelasttwoyearsduetoasuspensionofthetaxbreaksthatwere
enactedinthemid-1990s.Indianobserversexpectthenewgovernmenttorestoresomeoftheseincentives,whichcouldboostwin
ddevelopmentin1999.Acceleratedgrowthofthewindindustryislikelyin1999,withatleast2,500megawattsofcapacitylikelytobeinstalled,accordingtoWorldwatchInst
ituteestimates.SpainandtheUnitedStatesarepredictedtoexceed500megawattsofnewturbineseach.Othercountrieswheremarketgrowthislikely
includeCanada,Italy,Japan,NorwayandtheUnitedKingdom.Amongdevelopingcountries,Argentina,Brazil,CostaRica,EgyptandMoroccoaresomeofthe
nationsthatappearpoisedtodevelopsizablewindindustriesinthecomingyears,saysWorldwatch.
