arlier.Thesewindturbineshavethepowertogenerateroughly21billionkilowatt-hoursofelectricityin1999--enoughfor3.5millionsuburbanhomes,s
aysWorldwatch.Thewindpowerindustryisalsoexpandingrapidly,withsalesofroughly$2billionin1998.Thewindindustryiscreatingthousandsofjobsatatimewhene
mploymentinmanufacturingisfallinginmanynations,accordingtoWorldwatch.Fournationsleadthegrowthinwindenergy:Germany,Denmark,Spainandt
heUnitedStates.Germanyincreaseditscapacitythemostin1998,adding800megawatts,pushingitswindenergycapacitytomorethan2,800megawatts.Germany'sseven-
year-oldwindindustryisalreadyproducingasmuchelectricityastwoofthecountry'slargestcoal-firedpowerplants,acco
rdingtoWorldwatch.InthewindynorthernstateofSchleswigHolstein,windnowprovides15percentoftheelectricity.Spainadded395megawattsofwindpowerin1998
,pushingthecountry'soverallcapacityup86percentto850megawatts.InthenorthernindustrialstateofNavarra,whichhas
aparticularlyactivewindenergyindustry,23percentofthestate'selectricityalreadycomesfromwindturbines,mostofthemmanufact
uredinlocalassemblyfacilitiesthatemployhundredsofworkersintheareaaroundPamplona.WindpowerinstallationsalsogrewrapidlyintheUnitedSta
tesin1998,withapproximately235megawattsofnewcapacityaddedacross10differentstates.ThesurgeinU.S.windinvestme
ntwasspurredbyeffortstotakeadvantageofawindenergytaxcreditthatisscheduledtoexpireinJune1999,accordingt
oWorldwatch.Thelargestprojectsarea107-megawattwindfarminMinnesota,oneof42megawattsinWyoming,andoneof25megawattsinOregon.Mostoftheresto
fthenewcapacitycamefromseveraldozensmallprojects,rangingfromMainetoNewMexico.Denmarkadded235megawattsofcapacitythispastyear.Thecountry'
s1,350megawattsofwindpowernowgeneratemorethaneightpercentofthecountry'selectricity.And,Denmark'swindcompanieshavebecomeleadingexporters,accor
dingtoWorldwatch,accountingformorethanhalfthenewwindturbinesinstalledworldwidein1998.Thedevelopingworldwouldbenefitmostfromfurthergrowthofthewindind
ustrybecausethepowerdemandisgrowingrapidlyandmanycountrieslackadequateindigenoussuppliesoffossilfuels,saysWorldwatch.Sofar,Indiaisaheadofthegame,w
ithmorethan900megawattsofwindpowerinplace.However,winddevelopmenthasslowedthereinthelasttwoyearsduetoasuspensionofthetaxbreaksthatwereenact
edinthemid-1990s.Indianobserversexpectthenewgovernmenttorestoresomeoftheseincentives,whichcouldboostwinddevelo
pmentin1999.Acceleratedgrowthofthewindindustryislikelyin1999,withatleast2,500megawattsofcapacitylikelytobeinstalled,accordi
ngtoWorldwatchInstituteestimates.SpainandtheUnitedStatesarepredictedtoexceed500megawattsofnewturbineseach.Othercountrie
swheremarketgrowthislikelyincludeCanada,Italy,Japan,NorwayandtheUnitedKingdom.Amongdevelopingcountries,Argentina,Brazil,CostaRica,EgyptandMorocco
aresomeofthenationsthatappearpoisedtodevelopsizablewindindustriesinthecomingyears,saysWorldwatch.
