tyinplacethreeyearsearlier.Thesewindturbineshavethepowertogenerateroughly21billionkilowatt-hoursofelect
ricityin1999--enoughfor3.5millionsuburbanhomes,saysWorldwatch.Thewindpowerindustryisalsoexpandingrapidly,withsalesofroughly$2billionin1998.Thewindind
ustryiscreatingthousandsofjobsatatimewhenemploymentinmanufacturingisfallinginmanynations,accordingtoWorldwatch.Fournationsleadthegrowthinwind
energy:Germany,Denmark,SpainandtheUnitedStates.Germanyincreaseditscapacitythemostin1998,adding800megawatts,pushingitswindenergyca
pacitytomorethan2,800megawatts.Germany'sseven-year-oldwindindustryisalreadyproducingasmuchelectricityastwoofthecountry'
slargestcoal-firedpowerplants,accordingtoWorldwatch.InthewindynorthernstateofSchleswigHolstein,windnowprovides15percentoftheelectricity.
Spainadded395megawattsofwindpowerin1998,pushingthecountry'soverallcapacityup86percentto850megawatts.Inthenorther
nindustrialstateofNavarra,whichhasaparticularlyactivewindenergyindustry,23percentofthestate'selectricityalreadycomesfromwindt
urbines,mostofthemmanufacturedinlocalassemblyfacilitiesthatemployhundredsofworkersintheareaaroundPamplona.Windpowerinstallationsalsogrewrapidl
yintheUnitedStatesin1998,withapproximately235megawattsofnewcapacityaddedacross10differentstates.ThesurgeinU.S.windinvestmentwasspurredbyeffortstot
akeadvantageofawindenergytaxcreditthatisscheduledtoexpireinJune1999,accordingtoWorldwatch.Thelargestp
rojectsarea107-megawattwindfarminMinnesota,oneof42megawattsinWyoming,andoneof25megawattsinOregon.Mostofth
erestofthenewcapacitycamefromseveraldozensmallprojects,rangingfromMainetoNewMexico.Denmarkadded235meg
awattsofcapacitythispastyear.Thecountry's1,350megawattsofwindpowernowgeneratemorethaneightpercentofthecountry'selectricity.And,De
nmark'swindcompanieshavebecomeleadingexporters,accordingtoWorldwatch,accountingformorethanhalfthenewwindturbinesinstalledworldwidein1998.The
developingworldwouldbenefitmostfromfurthergrowthofthewindindustrybecausethepowerdemandisgrowingrapidlyandmanycountrieslackadequateindigenoussup
pliesoffossilfuels,saysWorldwatch.Sofar,Indiaisaheadofthegame,withmorethan900megawattsofwindpowerinp
lace.However,winddevelopmenthasslowedthereinthelasttwoyearsduetoasuspensionofthetaxbreaksthatwereenactedin
themid-1990s.Indianobserversexpectthenewgovernmenttorestoresomeoftheseincentives,whichcouldboostwinddevelopmentin1999.Acceleratedgrowthofthewindind
ustryislikelyin1999,withatleast2,500megawattsofcapacitylikelytobeinstalled,accordingtoWorldwatchInstituteestimates.SpainandtheUnitedStates
arepredictedtoexceed500megawattsofnewturbineseach.OthercountrieswheremarketgrowthislikelyincludeCanada,Italy,Japan,NorwayandtheUnitedKingdom.Amongd
evelopingcountries,Argentina,Brazil,CostaRica,EgyptandMoroccoaresomeofthenationsthatappearpoisedtodevelopsizablewindindustriesinthecomin
gyears,saysWorldwatch.
