g800megawatts,pushingitswindenergycapacitytomorethan2,800megawatts.Germany'sseven-year-oldwindindustryisa
lreadyproducingasmuchelectricityastwoofthecountry'slargestcoal-firedpowerplants,accordingtoWorldwatch.Inthewindynorther
nstateofSchleswigHolstein,windnowprovides15percentoftheelectricity.Spainadded395megawattsofwindpowerin1998,pushingtheco
untry'soverallcapacityup86percentto850megawatts.InthenorthernindustrialstateofNavarra,whichhasaparticular
lyactivewindenergyindustry,23percentofthestate'selectricityalreadycomesfromwindturbines,mostofthemmanufacturedinlocalassemblyfacilitiesthat
employhundredsofworkersintheareaaroundPamplona.WindpowerinstallationsalsogrewrapidlyintheUnitedStatesin1998,withapproximately235megawatt
sofnewcapacityaddedacross10differentstates.ThesurgeinU.S.windinvestmentwasspurredbyeffortstotakeadvantageofa
windenergytaxcreditthatisscheduledtoexpireinJune1999,accordingtoWorldwatch.Thelargestprojectsarea107-megawattwindfarminMinnesota,o
neof42megawattsinWyoming,andoneof25megawattsinOregon.Mostoftherestofthenewcapacitycamefromseveraldozensm
allprojects,rangingfromMainetoNewMexico.Denmarkadded235megawattsofcapacitythispastyear.Thecountry's1,350megawattsofwindpow
ernowgeneratemorethaneightpercentofthecountry'selectricity.And,Denmark'swindcompanieshavebecomeleadingexporters,accordingtoWorldwatch,accoun
tingformorethanhalfthenewwindturbinesinstalledworldwidein1998.Thedevelopingworldwouldbenefitmostfrom
furthergrowthofthewindindustrybecausethepowerdemandisgrowingrapidlyandmanycountrieslackadequateindigenoussuppliesoffossilfuels,s
aysWorldwatch.Sofar,Indiaisaheadofthegame,withmorethan900megawattsofwindpowerinplace.However,winddevelopmenthasslowedthereinthelasttwoyea
rsduetoasuspensionofthetaxbreaksthatwereenactedinthemid-1990s.Indianobserversexpectthenewgovernmenttorestoresomeoftheseincentives,whichcouldboost
winddevelopmentin1999.Acceleratedgrowthofthewindindustryislikelyin1999,withatleast2,500megawattsofcapacityli
kelytobeinstalled,accordingtoWorldwatchInstituteestimates.SpainandtheUnitedStatesarepredictedtoexceed500megawattsofnewturbineseach.Othercountr
ieswheremarketgrowthislikelyincludeCanada,Italy,Japan,NorwayandtheUnitedKingdom.Amongdevelopingcountri
es,Argentina,Brazil,CostaRica,EgyptandMoroccoaresomeofthenationsthatappearpoisedtodevelopsizablewindindustriesinthe
comingyears,saysWorldwatch.
