benefactionsector.Theseareintermediateprocessorsthatreceiveglassfromrecyclingprogramsandrunitthroughaseriesofstepstoremoveanycontaminants(
rocks,ceramics,metalcaps,etc.)andprovideauniformfeedstocktothebottlemanufacturers.Thesepreprocessorprovideanexcellentmarketfor
recyclingprogramsthatdonothavethevolumeorabilitytoproduceglassfordirectmilldelivery.Glassbeneficiationplantsusesophisticatedopt
icalsortingmachinestoseparatetheglassintothethreecolortypes.Theymayalsox-raytheglasstodetectanyrocksorceramicswhicharethenremoved.Magnetsandeddycurr
entseparatorsareusedtoremovedmagneticandnon-magneticmetalcontaminationfromcapsandlids.Theendproductisauniform
lysizedloadofgroundglassthatisfreeofcontaminantsreadilyacceptablebybottlemanufacturers.Lowergradesofrecycledglassthataretoomixed
orcontaminated,maybeusedinconcreteorinroadpavingmaterialcalled"Glasshalt".Insomeareaswherethereisanoverabund
anceoflowgradeglassitisusedtocoverovertherubbishinthelandfillinplaceofsand.Thisisnottrulyrecyclinganditishopedtha
tbettersortingtechnologywillsoonmakethismaterialusablefornewbottles.Glassrecyclingsavesenergybecauserecycledglasscanbeprocessedatalowertemperature
thanblendingnewglassfromrawmaterials.Also,recycledglassisusuallyclosertothebottleplantsthanthesourcesof
potash,themostexpensivecomponentinglassbottlesandjars.Bout32%ofenergycanbesavedbecauseofitslowmeltingpoint
.Itiseasiertomanufacturenewglasswarefromrecycledglassthanfromrawmaterial,whichcanalsoreduceairpollutionby20%,andwaterpollutionby50%.
