stralianeyedoctorcalledFredHollows.Hebelievedthattheoperationwastooexpensiveandthateverybodyhadtherighttosee.Soin1985hedeterminedtofindaway

toreducecosts.First,hetraineddoctorsinNepal,VietnamandEritrea,sothattheycouldperformeyeoperations.Second,in1992hestar

tedtheFredHollowsFoundationandraisedenoughmoneytobuildtwolaboratoriestomakecheapperspexlenses.OneopenedinErit

reaandoneinNepalin1994,ayearafterhisdeathin1993.Theselaboratoriesmeantthatthelensescouldbeproducedmuchmorecheaply.Theyarenows

oldtoover50countries.TheFredHollowsFoundationhasworkedtopreventblindnessinmorethan29countries.Ithastrainedover750localeyedoctors.In20

03oneofthesedoctorstrainedbytheFoundationputintheonemillionthFredHollowsperspexlens.FredHollowsspenthislifeintheserviceofothersa
