lows.Hebelievedthattheoperationwastooexpensiveandthateverybodyhadtherighttosee.Soin1985hedeterminedtofindawaytoreducecosts.First,
hetraineddoctorsinNepal,VietnamandEritrea,sothattheycouldperformeyeoperations.Second,in1992hestartedtheFredHollowsFoundationandraisedenough
moneytobuildtwolaboratoriestomakecheapperspexlenses.OneopenedinEritreaandoneinNepalin1994,ayearafterhisdeathin1993.Thes
elaboratoriesmeantthatthelensescouldbeproducedmuchmorecheaply.Theyarenowsoldtoover50countries.TheFredHollowsFoundationhasworkedtop
reventblindnessinmorethan29countries.Ithastrainedover750localeyedoctors.In2003oneofthesedoctorstrainedbyth
eFoundationputintheonemillionthFredHollowsperspexlens.FredHollowsspenthislifeintheserviceofothersandbeliev
