daskedforalot,andmaybehewassurprisedwhentheyagreedtoeverythingheaskedfor;threeships,honorsandtitles,andaper
centoftheprofitfromthetrade.5HisthreeshipswerenamedtheSantaMaria,thePinta,andtheNina.TheSantaMariawasthelargest;itwasaheavyc
argoshipwiththreemasts,twosquaresails,onetriangularsail,andanotherlittletopsail.ThePintawassmallerandfa
ster,thekindofshipcalledacaravel.TheNinawasacaraveltoo,andthesmallestofthethree.Theshipsweremadeofwoodand,ofcourse
,hadnomotors.Someoftheofficershadbunkbeds;someoftheothersailorsdidn'tevenhavethat.Theyusedwoodtocookthei
rfoodinfireboxesonthedeck.6Columbus,whocalledhimselfCristobalColoninSpain,captainedtheSantaMaria.Twobrothers,MartinandVincent
ePinzon,werethecaptainsofthePintaandtheNina.Altogether,therewereabout90menonthethreeshipsthatsetsailinAugus
tof1492.7Columbuskeptalog,orajournal,thatgivesusinformationabouthisvoyage.Fromhislog,weknowthattheysailedby"deadreckoning,"wh
ichwastheirwayofmeasuringtheircourse.Theyusedonlyamagneticcompass,andmeasurementsofdistanceandtime,tokeepthemontra
ck.Theshipsaveragedaspeedofabout150milesperday,butwhenthewindwasgood,theycouldgotwicethatfast.Whenthewindstopped,theshipssatstilltoo.8Thetriptu
rnedouttotakemuchlongerthananyoneonboardexpected.Aftermanydaysandnightsatsea,thesailorswerereadytoreturnhome.OnOctober10,Columbustalkedthemintosailin
gforwardforjustthreemoredays.OnOctober12,theysightedland,andthesamedaytheylanded,notintheIndies,butintheNe
wWorld.Therest,astheysay,ishistory.
