inidadisabrutal,sadstory.SpainandEnglandatdifferenttimesbothclaimedTrinidadastheircolonies.UnderBritishrule,theFrenchsettledinTrinidad,bringin
gwiththemtheirslaves,customs,andculture.By1797,14,000FrenchsettlerscametoliveinTrinidad,consistingofabout2,000whitesand12
,000slaves.Mostofthenativepeoples(oftencalledtheAmerindians)whowerethefirstpeopletoliveinTrinidad,diedfromforcedlabor
andillness.CarnivalwasintroducedtoTrinidadaround1785,astheFrenchsettlersbegantoarrive.Thetraditioncaughtonquickly,andfancy
ballswereheldwherethewealthyplantersputonmasks,wigs,andbeautifuldressesanddancedlongintothenight.Theuseofmaskshadspecialmeaning
fortheslaves,becauseformanyAfricanpeoples,maskingiswidelyusedintheirritualsforthedead.ObviouslybannedfromthemaskedballsoftheFrench
,theslaveswouldholdtheirownlittlecarnivalsintheirbackyards—usingtheirownritualsandfolklore,butalsoimita
tingtheirmasters’behavioratthemaskedballs.ForAfricanpeople,carnivalbecameawaytoexpresstheirpowerasindividuals,aswellastheirrichculturaltraditions
.After1838(whenslaverywasabolished),thefreedAfricansbegantohosttheirowncarnivalcelebrationsinthestree
tsthatgrewmoreandmoreelaborate,andsoonbecamemorepopularthantheballs.Today,carnivalinTrinidadislikeamir
rorthatreflectsthefacesthemanyimmigrantswhohavecometothisislandnationfromEurope,Africa,India,andChina.African,Asian,an
dAmericanIndianinfluenceshavebeenparticularlystrong.CarnivalissuchanimportantaspectoflifeinTrinidadthatmanyschoolsbelievethatspon
soringacarnivalbandisawaytoteachyoungpeopleabouttheirrootsandculture.InTrinidad’sKiddiesCarnival,hundredsofschoolsandcommunityor
ganizationsparticipate!Inthisway,communitiesworktogethertodevelopstrongerfriendshipsandgreaterrespectfo
