elebratelife!Likemanyothernationsundercolonialrule,thehistoryofNativeAmericansandAfricanpeopleinTrinidadis
abrutal,sadstory.SpainandEnglandatdifferenttimesbothclaimedTrinidadastheircolonies.UnderBritishrule,theFrenchsettledinTrinidad,bringingw
iththemtheirslaves,customs,andculture.By1797,14,000FrenchsettlerscametoliveinTrinidad,consistingofabout2,000whitesand12,000slaves.Mostofthenativ
epeoples(oftencalledtheAmerindians)whowerethefirstpeopletoliveinTrinidad,diedfromforcedlaborandillness.CarnivalwasintroducedtoTrinidad
around1785,astheFrenchsettlersbegantoarrive.Thetraditioncaughtonquickly,andfancyballswereheldwherethewealthyplantersputonmasks,wigs,andbeautifuldre
ssesanddancedlongintothenight.Theuseofmaskshadspecialmeaningfortheslaves,becauseformanyAfricanpeoples,maskingiswidelyusedintheirritua
lsforthedead.ObviouslybannedfromthemaskedballsoftheFrench,theslaveswouldholdtheirownlittlecarnivalsintheirbackyards—usingtheirown
ritualsandfolklore,butalsoimitatingtheirmasters’behavioratthemaskedballs.ForAfricanpeople,carnivalbecameawaytoexp
resstheirpowerasindividuals,aswellastheirrichculturaltraditions.After1838(whenslaverywasabolished),thefreedAfricansb
egantohosttheirowncarnivalcelebrationsinthestreetsthatgrewmoreandmoreelaborate,andsoonbecamemorepopularth
antheballs.Today,carnivalinTrinidadislikeamirrorthatreflectsthefacesthemanyimmigrantswhohavecometothis
islandnationfromEurope,Africa,India,andChina.African,Asian,andAmericanIndianinfluenceshavebeenparticularlystrong.Carnivalissuchanimportantaspec
toflifeinTrinidadthatmanyschoolsbelievethatsponsoringacarnivalbandisawaytoteachyoungpeopleabouttheirrootsand2culture.In
Trinidad’sKiddiesCarnival,hundredsofschoolsandcommunityorganizationsparticipate!Inthisway,communitiesworktogethertodevelopstrongerfriendshipsan
dgreaterrespectforthemanyculturesthatmakeupTrinidad.
