”.Theaccentsplacedatthebottominthisstudy,ontheotherhand,wereregional(地区的)accents.Theseaccentswereseenas“common”and“ugly”.However,asimilarstudyofBrit

ishaccentsintheUSturnedtheseresultsupsidedownandplacedsomeregionalaccentsasthemostattractiveandBBCEnglishastheleast.ThissuggeststhatBritisha

ttitudestowardsaccentshavedeeprootsandarebasedonclassprejudice.Inrecentyears,however,younguppermiddle-classpeopleinLondon,havebeguntoadoptsomeregion

alaccents,inordertohidetheirclassorigins.Thisisanindicationofclassbecomingunnoticed.However,the1995popsong“CommonPeople”putsforwardtheviewthat
