herearegoodreasonstothinktheyexist.Whenalargestarhasburntallitsfuelitexplodesintoasupernova.Thestuffthatisleftcollapsesdowntoanextremelydenseobjectk
nownasaneutronstar.Weknowthattheseobjectsexistbecauseseveralhavebeenfoundusingradiotelescopes.Iftheneutronstaristoolarge,thegravitationalforce
soverwhelmthepressuregradientsandcollapsecannotbehalted.Theneutronstarcontinuestoshrinkuntilitfinallybeco
mesablackhole.Thismasslimitisonlyacoupleofsolarmasses,thatisabouttwicethemassofoursun,andsoweshouldexpectatleasta
fewneutronstarstohavethismass.(Oursunisnotparticularlylarge;infactitisquitesmall.)Asupernovaoccursinourga
laxyonceevery300years,andinneighbouringgalaxiesabout500neutronstarshavebeenidentified.Thereforewearequiteconfidentthatthereshouldalsobesomeblackhol
