dlerandhiscolleagues,researchpsychologistsatUniversityofBritishColumbia,havebeenstudyingFirstNationgroupsinwestern

Canada.Likemanyfirstnationpeoples,thesegroupshavebeentornfrommuchoftheirtraditionalculture,includingtheirlanguage,andtherefo

retheirstories.Adolescentsintheseculturesareathighrisk.Self­harmistoofrequent;insomegroups,itisupto800timesthenationallevel.Yetforthose

groupsthathavemanagedtopreservetheirculturalstoriesandcontinuetodostorytelling,adolescentriskisnohigherthanthenationala
